Respect for Traditions

  • In the Middle East, modest dress is highly valued, particularly in religious sites and traditional areas. Public displays of affection are discouraged, and gender interactions may follow cultural norms.
  • In the Far East, respect for hierarchy and elders is central. Bowing is common in Japan and Korea, while maintaining a polite and reserved demeanour is appreciated in many Asian cultures.

 

Public Behaviour

  •  Loud or overly expressive behaviour in public spaces may be seen as disruptive in both regions, where a more composed and respectful demeanour is preferred.
  • In the Middle East, addressing people with formal titles and showing deference to elders is customary. In the Far East, avoiding direct confrontation and maintaining harmony in interactions is key.

 

Photography

  • Always ask permission before photographing people, particularly in conservative regions. Some religious or historic sites may prohibit
    photography altogether—check local guidelines.
  • In the Far East, some temples and shrines restrict photography, and it’s polite to follow posted signs or guidance from locals.

 

Conversation Topics

  • Politics and religious discussions can be sensitive, especially in the Middle East. It’s best to approach such topics with caution and respect.
  • In the Far East, topics around national pride, historical conflicts, and governmental policies should be handled delicately. Criticism of leadership or cultural norms may be unwelcome.
